Emeg Group has successfully completed two key electrical engineering projects to support its long-term customer Great Western Railways (GWR).
A points heating installation has been completed at Reading Rail Depot where the Emeg team has successfully installed track heating strips at 32 separate points within the depot, which will help ensure there are no frozen points during the cold winter months.
Work included in-situ and precast concrete foundations for heating cabinets and transformers, cable troughing and buried ducting. There was also a notably successful weekend possession to install cable containment across the main access road, which was completed with minimal disruption.
Neal Deacon, Emeg Group Managing Director, said: “The Reading points heating installation received very positive client feedback, noting that “it was probably one of the best they have been involved in” and was successfully completed with specialist civils support from our sister company Avidrail.”
Emeg has also manufactured and commissioned mobile shore supply units for use at Taunton Fairweather sidings.
Manufacturing was completed during March and the units have now been delivered to the GWR Taunton depot where they will be stored until they need to be deployed for use by the depot.
Shore supply units provide external electrical power to trains when they are not using their main traction supply, for example when engines are shut down or overhead lines are de‑energised. These systems are essential in depots, stations and stabling yards to maintain lighting, heating, air‑conditioning and battery charging while trains are stationary.
“The mobile shore supply unit was a concept developed by Emeg to support multiple blockade programmes in association with HS2,” explained Neal.
“Our first deployment took place at Bristol Temple Meads Station in December 2024, where the system was successfully utilised, and we now have several orders for continued supply to a number of rail operators.”
